Overview

The Lawrenceville School announces a job opening for a Physical Science teacher. We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, collegial individuals who want to work with both adults and students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting. The strongest candidates will have experience teaching chemistry and physics. Candidates may also have experience teaching one of the subjects and significant coursework in the other subject.

 

It is the mission of the Science Department of the Lawrenceville School to introduce students to both the beautiful simplicity and intriguing complexity of the world to foster a life-long curiosity about the world in which they live. Members of the science department will cultivate in students the understanding that scientific knowledge is characterized by empirical criteria, logical argument, and skeptical review.  It will prepare all students to use an understanding of scientific concepts and processes for personal decision making, effective participation in civic affairs, and preparation for those who choose advanced study in science beyond Lawrenceville.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four sections, two to three preparations per trimester (a total of 10 sections in a year).
  • Two seasons of coaching or equivalent co-curricular commitment, including at least one season of interscholastic coaching (or the equivalent).
  • Advise five to eight students, and do one evening a week of “House duty,” providing supervision in a student residence from 7-11:30 pm. Although not necessarily starting their first year, faculty who reside in School-provided housing are expected to spend eight years living in one of the residential houses at some point in their career.
  • Chaperone a weekend activity (dance, coffee house, etc.) at least once per term.
  • Work within the department and in the broader school to foster community and belonging and to support the School’s anti-racist commitments.
  • Work professionally and cooperatively within the department, the School, and the broader Lawrenceville community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Physics; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least two years high school teaching experience.
  • A passion for teaching chemistry and/or physics.
  • The strongest candidates have the ability to collaborate with peers to develop curriculum, a willingness to be flexible and a desire for feedback.
  • Ability to teach a range of chemistry courses (introductory, general and advanced).
  • Background in and commitment to planning and facilitating collaborative, student-centered learning experiences.
  • Background in and commitment to culturally responsive teaching.
  • Experience with effective use of technology in the learning process.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication (oral and written) abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed and appropriate.
  • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Google suite and Microsoft Office suite.
